In 1997, Kenner Toys, had already taken over by Hasbro Toys
In 1995 and 1996 Kenner/Hasbro released the first full series of Star Wars action figures since the original Power of the Force line from 1984. This POTF collection, now nearly 30 years old was part of Kenner-Hasbro's Lucas Arts Licensing agreement before they warded the permanent license in 1997-1998. Many toy companies went on to create expensive proposals to Lucas Arts including two toy companies I worked for, Toy Biz Inc and Playmates Toys.
In the long run the incumbent won the license as Hasbro bought not only Cincinnati-Based Kenner Toys, but San Francisco-based Galoob Toys which were both early licensees and there was even a rumor that George Lucas himself had invested in Galoob Toys in its time before they joined with Kenner to become one of Hasbro's many company brands and leading it to become one of the biggest toy companies in Toy Industry history.
I bought this Darth Vader and many others at the midtown (Harold Square) Toys R Us in Manhattan the week it came out. If you notice, Princess Leia was not photographed as part of the collection. The back photo was taken before the Princess Leia was ready and approved for production.
